Dr. Felipe Mercado: Trusted Expert Wise Leadership, Mental Wellness, and Transformative Systems Design *
Dr. Felipe Mercado’s journey through homelessness, incarceration, addiction, grief, and healing is not separate from his work. It is part of what gives his voice its clarity, depth, and urgency. He knows what it means to survive systems that were never built to hold people with care.
Today, as an Assistant Professor of Social Work at California State University, Fresno, and founder of Wise Souls LLC, he helps schools, organizations, and communities create cultures where people can heal, belong, and thrive. His work bridges lived experience, scholarship, compassion, and implementation so that healing is not just named, but practiced.
Dr. Mercado is a six-time Amazon best-selling author, including A Journey to Compassion: Learning to Stand Firm in the Face of Pain, and a contributor to the Emmy Award-winning mental health series A Critical State of Mind. Through teaching, writing, consulting, and coaching, he helps leaders and institutions build systems that do more than measure people. They learn how to hold them.
Resilient Life. Compassionate Mission.
Pain shaped Dr. Mercado’s early life, but it did not get the final word. His lived experience taught him that suffering is never only personal. It is shaped by systems, silence, and the conditions people are forced to survive. That truth still shapes how he teaches, leads, and serves.
He does not speak about healing from a distance. He speaks from a life that has demanded it. That is why his work resonates with educators, clinicians, leaders, and communities seeking something more honest than polished language and something more useful than inspiration alone.

It has helped districts build tiered, healing-centered systems that are trauma-responsive, culturally grounded, and better able to support connection, regulation, and learning.
